{"id":156,"date":"2011-05-11T14:47:11","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T21:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10.155.6.59\/south-counselling\/"},"modified":"2011-05-11T14:47:11","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T21:47:11","slug":"some-tips-from-new-university-students-to-grade-12s","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/south-counselling\/faqs\/some-tips-from-new-university-students-to-grade-12s\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Tips From New University Students to Grade 12&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong>Ease Pressure --&gt; <\/strong><strong>Don't add to it<\/strong> <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 Youth of this generation are so anxious about the future that they are putting things off until the last minute<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ie: Completing PSI Forms\u2026Applying to College &amp; Universities\u2026Applying for a Job<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Generation Y = Slacker??<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This generation of youth have a different view on careers and entering the workforce <strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Let students know that its \u201cOK\u201d not to know what they want to do for the rest of their live<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080\">Encourage Self Knowledge<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Tell students to volunteer or acquire internships<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Show students how it will benefit them<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Get away from the viewpoint that students have of: \u201cWhat is it going to do for me?\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Tell students to think \u201clifestyle\u201d<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The career they choose will dictate the type of lifestyle they are going to have<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask them to think about what sort of people they want to work with, what aspects do they want to have from this career?<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Tell students to act without the fear of what others may think<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a career based on what they want, and not what their peer or societal pressures are to become <strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080\">Manage Expectations<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Tell students to \u201cfind their passion\u201d<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask themselves: \u201cWhat Makes You Happy At Work?\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Let them know\u2026..it\u2019s not going to be easy<strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is going to take a lot of work &amp; money to become where they see themselves in the future<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080\">\u201cWhat I Know Now\u2026What I Wish I\u2019d Known Then\u201d<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The Cost of University\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s a real shocker when you get into post-secondary and find out exactly what it costs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Grade Restrictions from High School in Post-Secondary\n<ul>\n<li>If a student wants to take Calculus 12 in University, then they require an \u201cA\u201d in Math 12<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Importance of Registration Times\n<ul>\n<li>Plan ahead and choose the courses that you want so you don\u2019t get on waitlists and don't get into courses<\/li>\n<li>If you have an 8am registration, make sure you are ready to register for that time, or you may be stuck without courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement is KEY to students\n<ul>\n<li>Tell them to keep their doors open<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Go to ALL the events offered at the Universities \u00e0 Marketing, Accounting, Etc\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>Talk to people and get involved outside of class time in areas that they want to focus on or work in for the future<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to get involved from Day 1\n<ul>\n<li>It may help you acquire contacts or get a job once you\u2019ve completed your degree<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ease Pressure --&gt; Don't add to it \u00a0 Youth of this generation are so anxious about the future that they are putting things off until the last minute Ie: Completing PSI Forms\u2026Applying to College &amp; Universities\u2026Applying for a Job Generation Y = Slacker??
