The winter holidays can be a fun (and busy!) time of year for many kids and their families. There are lots of opportunities to support language skills during holiday activities while your family is away from school over the holidays. See what suggestions below would be fun and easy for your family to try. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Take a lot of pictures and look back at them together frequently.\u00a0This can also be looking back at photos from past holiday get-togethers and activities.\u00a0Talk about what happened, using a good language model.\u00a0This can help your\u00a0child\/student\u00a0know\u00a0what to expect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Prepare for phone calls or Zoom meetings with family by talking about things that happened and practicing sharing. You can also prepare questions for your child to ask others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Talk about Small, Medium, and Large problems that could happen around the holidays and how you can keep calm and solve them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Discuss options of things your\u00a0child\u00a0can do to\u00a0take a break if the holidays get overwhelming.\u00a0Make a picture\u00a0menu of choices. You can make one for your\u00a0whole\u00a0family and model using it also!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Read books together about your holiday and traditions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Do holiday crafts or baking together. Talk with your child about what you are doing, and include the steps (e.g.\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s make a card for your grandma!\u00a0First\u00a0I draw a picture, then I write the name, then I put it in an envelope,\u00a0last\u00a0we send it!\u201d).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Sing holiday songs and\u00a0pause before a key rhyming word to\u00a0allow them to\u00a0fill it in to support their phonological awareness skills. You can also make a game of\u00a0practicing\u00a0rhyming other holiday words\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0light, night, fright, tight, bite).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. To build vocabulary and categorization, try\u00a0thinking of holiday\u00a0words with your child, taking turns and supporting as needed. You can ask:\u00a0\u201cWhat are some things we see during the holidays?\u201d, \u201cWhat are some things we smell?\u201d etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
