Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in Burnaby Schools assess and treat communication disorders.\u00a0 These may include articulation, language, stuttering, social communication difficulties, and augmentative communication needs.<\/p>\n

Who do we support?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Students with identified communication difficulties or suspected communication difficulties.<\/p>\n

SLPs consult and collaborate with:<\/p>\n

  • educational assistants<\/li>\n

    What does our year look like?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    September and <\/i><\/b>October<\/i><\/b> \u2013 Collaborating with school teams to determine needs of the school<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/i>October to May<\/i><\/b> \u2013 Providing speech & language assessment and intervention for the school<\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/i>June<\/i><\/b> \u2013 Reporting, preschool observations and home programming<\/p>\n

    Goals-Driven Service<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

    Intervention for communication difficulties in Burnaby Schools is goals-driven.\u00a0 <\/b>SLPs support students who have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) with communication-related goals and objectives.\u00a0 SLPs also support students who do not have IEPs with their speech & language goals.<\/p>\n

    Services are delivered in a variety of ways:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • assessments<\/li>\n
    • direct therapy on an individual or group basis<\/li>\n
    • in class support<\/li>\n
    • consultation\/collaboration with school personnel and parents<\/li>\n
    • development of home programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      How do we support Speech & Language \/\u00a0 Communication goals?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

      Speech and Language services are delivered in a variety of ways.\u00a0 SLPs support students by:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • evaluating students suspected of having speech and\/or language and communication difficulties<\/li>\n
      • providing individual and group therapy to students<\/li>\n
      • planning, developing and providing services, materials, and equipment to best meet the needs of individual students<\/li>\n
      • providing instruction and materials to teachers and educational assistants<\/li>\n
      • participating in IEP planning and program development<\/li>\n
      • providing professional development and workshops for district staff and parents<\/li>\n
      • liaising with community agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
