These are the mental processes that allow us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Like an orchestra conductor or an air traffic controller, to do all this the brain builds the ability to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses (self-regulation). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While\u00a0executive\u00a0functions\u00a0are\u00a0emerging\u00a0for all children,\u00a0they\u00a0can be more challenging for\u00a0students with learning and behavioral disabilities.\u00a0Executive functions\u00a0have a major impact on\u00a0a child\u2019s academic and social participation and success.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Tips to help your child develop executive functions and independence<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1 . Use <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">visual reminders\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the morning, after school and\u00a0bed time\u00a0routines. This can include something as simple as a written or drawn-out schedule on their bedroom door, the fridge or the bathroom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keep the schedule somewhere\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everyone can see it.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Look at it together\u00a0often<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">celebrate\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when tasks get done\u00a0&#8211; check it off!<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Have your\u00a0<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">child\u00a0be part of making the schedule\u00a0\u2013 <\/span><\/b>they draw some of it; include favorite things; name it together e.g. \u201cKira\u2019s Awesome Mornings\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Try using a white board; window markers; or something basic like paper and felts. For instance make a future picture or future movie of the process of brushing your teeth, hair, eating breakfast, etc.\u00a0 You could say to your child \u201cLet\u2019s put on our future glasses and think about what getting home will look like after school. Have your child <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">act it out\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 gesture with your body the act of doing each step. Point to where you\u2019ll be going. Example: If it\u2019s cleaning your room, point to your room, pretend to walk there, act out the actions (open drawer; put in clothes; close the drawer; make bed). When we gesture the future, it \u201csticks\u201d in our mind. This may include looking at their planner and helping them to map out their homework or assignments\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using a calendar<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
