{"id":1933,"date":"2022-03-28T15:34:06","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T22:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mountain-library\/?p=1933"},"modified":"2022-03-28T15:34:06","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T22:34:06","slug":"challenged-banned-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mountain-library\/2022\/03\/28\/challenged-banned-books\/","title":{"rendered":"Challenged &#038; Banned Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April is Literacy Month here at Burnaby Mountain.\u00a0 While we&#8217;ll be saving the school-wide celebrating for April 11 &#8211; 14, here in the Library Learning Commons, we&#8217;re going to make a full month of it.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re starting with a week that encourages you to think about your Freedom to Read.<br \/>\nBooks can take us to different times, different places, just &#8230; different.\u00a0 Sometimes we see our own lives in them, sometimes others&#8217; lives &#8211; a chance to maybe grow some empathy.<br \/>\nSometimes books can make us feel uncomfortable.\u00a0 There seems to be a lot of that out there right now.\u00a0 Stories or information that make people uncomfortable, things they don&#8217;t want to read or don&#8217;t want others to read.\u00a0 This is not new; it has been happening for as long as there have been books.\u00a0 But the challenging and banning of books seems to be on the uptick.<br \/>\nWhile you can decide there are books you don&#8217;t want to read, don&#8217;t let your friends, someone else&#8217;s parents, or that random person down the street decide that for you.\u00a0 Stand up for your right to choose and to read.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Censorship comes from a place of fear.
