{"id":1465,"date":"2020-04-20T21:02:05","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T21:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mountain-library\/?p=1465"},"modified":"2020-04-20T21:02:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T21:02:05","slug":"what-should-you-read-during","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mountain-library\/2020\/04\/20\/what-should-you-read-during\/","title":{"rendered":"What Should You Read During&#8230;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the last day the public libraries were open here in Burnaby, we went over to the McGill branch and stocked up.\u00a0 Spring Break was just starting and it was looking like I was going to have even more reading time than usual.\u00a0 Well it&#8217;s 5 weeks on and I have done lots of reading and my stash has diminished &#8211; I&#8217;ve just started on the last one.<br \/>\nSo what is a librarian (or any reader) to do without a library to browse through?\u00a0 Title suggestions, anyone?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve just spent some time looking through loads of &#8220;books everyone should read before&#8230;&#8221; and while there is lots of variety, some titles come up over and over.\u00a0 So let&#8217;s look at some that you should actually be able to get your hands on, even in the middle of self-isolation.<br \/>\n<em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone<\/em> &#8211; I&#8217;ve already talked about this one.\u00a0 J.K. Rowling and publishers have made this one available to as many as want to read it &#8211; download it as an eBook or audiobook, English or French.<br \/>\n<em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em> (or any of Austen&#8217;s) &#8211; Some people turn their noses up at Jane Austen, but with her books more popular than ever 200 years on, I think there&#8217;s an argument to at least give her a try.\u00a0 And no, they aren&#8217;t &#8216;girl&#8217; books.<br \/>\n<em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> &#8211; Read the trilogy or start with <em>The Hobbit<\/em>.\u00a0 J.R.R. Tolkien&#8217;s Middle Earth adventures are epic.\u00a0 Available to borrow as audiobooks from the Internet Archive&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.org\/collections\/k-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Library<\/a> (you just need to create an account).<br \/>\n<em>Little Women<\/em> &#8211; Louisa May Alcott&#8217;s story of 4 sisters living through a difficult time (sound familiar?).<br \/>\n<em>Fahrenheit 451<\/em> &#8211; Dystopia before it was a thing.\u00a0 Ray Bradbury paints a picture of a world where the written word is a crime.\u00a0 Also available from the Open Library.<br \/>\n<em>Jane Eyre<\/em> or <em>Wuthering Heights<\/em> &#8211; The Bronte sisters (there were actually 3 of them writing) wrote some really atmospheric novels.\u00a0 These are not &#8216;happy&#8217; stories, but well worth the read.<br \/>\n<em>Charlotte&#8217;s Web<\/em> &#8211; You should all be familiar with this one by E.B. White.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s time to share it with a younger sibling.<br \/>\n<em>Brave New World<\/em> &#8211; When I was in grade 12, we read 1984 (George Orwell) and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.\u00a0 What I remember is that they are the same story, written in opposite directions.\u00a0 1984 is grey and Brave New World is full of colour.\u00a0 Both are scary visions of the future.\u00a0 You can listen to Brave New World for free from <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.audible.com\/discovery\/enterprise-discovery-21122353011?ref=adbl_ent_anon_ds_ds_dccs_sbtp-0-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audible<\/a>, which has made a bunch of books freely available for <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.audible.com\/discovery\/enterprise-discovery-21103929011?ref=adbl_ent_anon_ds_ds_dbb_0-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">students<\/a>.<br \/>\nThere are so many more that turn up on multiple &#8216;must-read&#8217; lists.\u00a0 You should be able to access all of these.\u00a0 Looking at my list, they also have something else in common &#8211; all of them have had movies made from them.\u00a0 Most are in our library.\u00a0 So read now and check out the movies when we get back to school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the last day the public libraries were open here in Burnaby, we went over to the McGill branch and stocked up.\u00a0 Spring Break was just starting and it was looking like I was going to have even more reading time than usual.\u00a0 Well it&#8217;s 5 weeks on and I have done lots of reading and my stash has diminished &#8211; I&#8217;ve just started on the last one.
