{"id":1785,"date":"2012-03-28T12:29:20","date_gmt":"2012-03-28T19:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/?p=1785"},"modified":"2012-03-28T12:31:00","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T19:31:00","slug":"exploring-free-solutions-for-managing-videos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/2012\/03\/exploring-free-solutions-for-managing-videos\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring &#8220;Free&#8221; Solutions for Managing Videos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/canonHV30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1788\" title=\"HD Canon HV30 Video Camera\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/canonHV30-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Okay, I was quite excited to use the Canon Vixia HV30 HDV the other day to tape the &#8220;Janet Series&#8221; because it creates quality video in HD and it picks up voice(s) extremely well without having to rely on a mobile mic.\u00a0\u00a0Kidding aside, we are trying to splice together an instructional series on Lit Circles\u00a0for teachers to review.\u00a0 If you are venturing to use a video camera, please note the challenges.\u00a0 My goal is to create FLV files so that these video clips can be easily viewed on our blog.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the steps I used to make this media viable:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Connecting my Canon via Firewire\u00a0IEEE (4pin to 4pin) to my Laptop<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/4pinto4pin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1789 alignright\" title=\"4pinto4pin Firewire\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/4pinto4pin-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/4pinto4pin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/4pinto4pin.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Troubleshooting:<\/span><\/strong> What happens when you connect these devices, but the laptop does not recognize the camera when you click on My Computer?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Try This:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right Click on My Computer<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click on Hardware Tab<\/li>\n<li>Click Device Manager<\/li>\n<li>Check to see if IEEE shows up.<\/li>\n<li>If not, Click on Action, Scan for New Hardware Changes.\u00a0 This should pick up the device. I know this sounds really techie, so feel free to ask the Learning Technologies Resource Teacher for help or some of your very techie students.\u00a0\u00a0Although I followed all these steps,\u00a0the video camera was still not visible in My Computer. My Video expert guy, Lucky, directed me to download Video Capture Software HDV Split shown below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Download HDV Split\u00a0and Run<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/HDVSplit_capturescreen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1791\" title=\"HDVSplit_capturescreen\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/HDVSplit_capturescreen-268x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/HDVSplit_capturescreen-268x300.jpg 268w, https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/HDVSplit_capturescreen.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; does not require a reboot<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Notice that the Canon is detected<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve selected Scenes Split to be able to manage smaller files<\/li>\n<li>Provide a Logical File Name<\/li>\n<li>Provide an Output Directory<\/li>\n<li>Start to play the video first, then click the Record button in the program.<\/li>\n<li>This will create a <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">m2t file <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">(If the program asks you to index, click OK)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0<\/span>Download Avidemux and Run<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This program will convert the &#8220;m2t file&#8221; to &#8220;avi&#8221; so that I am able to edit the video in Movie Maker (free in XP and better in Windows 7)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on Video and select MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid)<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/avidemux_capture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1797\" title=\"Avidemux  Home Screen Capture\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/avidemux_capture-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/avidemux_capture-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/avidemux_capture.jpg 710w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>How do I know which one to select.\u00a0 Again, I trust my go to person who has a better understanding of encoders and compressors.\u00a0 I just want one that works!\u00a0 What I do understand is that everytime a video moves from one format to another, quality is compromised.\u00a0 Right now I am try to keep the best quality until I am ready to compress into FLV format for final viewing.<\/li>\n<li>A POP UP will appear &#8220;This looks like mpeg. Do you want to index it?&#8221;, \u00a0Click Yes and allow it to Index<\/li>\n<li>Click File, Save Video, change the filename and\u00a0add &#8220;.avi&#8221; to the end.<\/li>\n<li>Click Save and let the Encoding Process take place\u00a0 (note: This is will take quite a bit of time depending on the size of video\u00a0&#8211; Go grab a cup of java or leave the machine)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4.\u00a0 To edit the\u00a0video, Import it using\u00a0Movie Maker.\u00a0 Drag into the timeline and edit.\u00a0 File, Save Movie, Select DV-AVI format or WMV. Please search our blog for documentation on how to use Movie Maker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/flvencoder_homescreen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1800\" title=\"flvencoder_homescreen\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/03\/flvencoder_homescreen-300x153.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"334\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Now I need to convert\u00a0my &#8220;avi file&#8221; to \u00a0FLV using\u00a0 Adobe Flash CS3 Encoder (You may need to download)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click File, Open<\/li>\n<li>Locate the video file<\/li>\n<li>Start Queue<\/li>\n<li>(You will need to leave the machine to process the file) My 250 MB file took approx. 1.5 hours to process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6.
