Literature Circles Gone Digital &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/book-circle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1667\" title=\"book-circle\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/book-circle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t quite sure how to title this, swinging back and forth from &#8220;Passionate Conversations&#8221; and &#8220;Growing Readers&#8221;, both of which I believe\u00a0<a href=\"ITERATURE-http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/LCIRCLES-process-2012-02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Lit Circles<\/a>\u00a0to be. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been working with a fabulous teacher on engaging her class \u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/LITERATURE-CIRCLES-process-2012-02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Literature Circles<\/a>. \u00a0Oh not the process with all the jobs\/roles (which I&#8217;ve done many times before), but the approach outlined by Faye Brownlie in\u00a0<em><a title=\"Grand Conversations, Thoughtful Responses\" href=\"http:\/\/www.portageandmainpress.com\/book_detail.cfm?biD=42\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Conversations, Thoughtful Responses<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0 Our goal was to encourage enthusiasm for reading and create environments for deep conversation (in other words, give &#8216;choice and voice&#8217;). \u00a0We chose to extend our notion of &#8216;environment&#8217; to include not only the physical classroom, but also online using our class blogs to extend the walls of conversation. \u00a0In doing so, we believed that we could complement the innate need to find community, purpose and audience.\u00a0Thankfully, I work with a great team who came along to help and document our journey. \u00a0We hope to share both the instructional content as well as the conversations and some video clips along the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/litcircle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1668 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px;\" title=\"litcircle\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2012\/02\/litcircle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How did we start?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Our\u00a0<a title=\"DLRC\" href=\"http:\/\/library.sd41.bc.ca\/common\/servlet\/presenthomeform.do?l2m=Home&amp;tm=Home&amp;l2m=Home\" target=\"_blank\">DLRC<\/a>\u00a0(District Learning Resource Centre) has a wide range of book bins just meant for lit circle conversations. \u00a0Choosing the bin was easy (each bin is themed with 5 copies of 6 different novels of varying degrees of readability). \u00a0A book talk\u00a0<em>(Lesson 1)<\/em>\u00a0was given that was no more than 2 minutes each, \u00a0served as hooks &#8211; we\u00a0dangled intrigue, angst, curiosity, mystery and downright fun. \u00a0Students were given time to roam the room to check the books out &#8220;up close&#8221;. \u00a0Book groups were organized by student choice and\u00a0availability of texts. \u00a0We also promised them that if they did not receive their first choice, that throughout the weeks they would have free reign on reading all the books if they wanted. \u00a0We waited until\u00a0the next day just to generate the buzz and then handed the books out. \u00a0<em>Lesson 2<\/em>\u00a0was simply allowing them the entire period of just solid reading. \u00a0The teacher wasn&#8217;t too sure about this as previous experience told her that there was no way that we could extend this to 45 minutes. \u00a0You could have heard a pin drop the entire time as students found their comfy spots and dug into their texts. \u00a0 Matching student lives to books that &#8220;leap off shelves&#8221;
