{"id":1646,"date":"2012-02-17T16:56:12","date_gmt":"2012-02-17T23:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/?p=1646"},"modified":"2012-02-17T17:14:59","modified_gmt":"2012-02-18T00:14:59","slug":"little-tools-that-do-big-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/2012\/02\/little-tools-that-do-big-things\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Tools that Do Big Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/toolbox-icon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Toolbox-icon\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/toolbox-icon.png?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you ever want to do something with your class and the whole technology thing is just too much? \u00a0I get that a lot so I&#8217;m always on the hunt for tools that &#8220;take the mystery out of things&#8221; and just work. \u00a0Remember that we are also in a world of constant change so there are people out there who are creating new and\u00a0different tools all the time. \u00a0More importantly, how would you use it to support learning? \u00a0Here are some that I&#8217;ve used in classrooms:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a title=\"iPiccy - image editor\" href=\"http:\/\/ipiccy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">iPiccy<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; my latest image editor (simple, simple, simple). \u00a0Oh did I say simple? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/umbrella.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"umbrella\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/umbrella.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a>The online tools allow you to apply special effects, add text or paint to jazz up images. \u00a0Registration is not required; upload images from anywhere and download the completed masterpiece when completed.<br \/>\n<strong>How would I use it?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Have students take images (camera) for their blog writing or other powerful messages; decide on a visual message and edit using iPiccy accordingly; use in a blog post to enhance or support writing or in powerpoint or Glogster presentations. \u00a0In any of these circumstances, the goal is to use images to convey a deeper level of communication beyond words. See some examples from <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/comeauj\" target=\"_blank\">Mrs Comeau&#8217;s class of grade 3 bloggers <\/a>&#8211; they will tell you that they&#8217;re writers!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Vocaroo\" href=\"http:\/\/vocaroo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vocaroo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This extremely simple online sound recorder is a must-have for recording anything. \u00a0I first wrote about this in\u00a0<a title=\"Cultivating Conversation\" href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/07\/cultivating-conversation-spoken-ink\/\" target=\"_blank\">November<\/a>, where I explored the importance of developing oral language. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/headset_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"headset_small\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/headset_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"60\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>How would I use it?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Record a practice speech or ideas &#8211; use it as a memory jog for writing. \u00a0Or instead of writing, record a blog post by audio and post.\u00a0Voice recorders also give students the independence to self-assess their achievement by capturing and freezing words in time.\u00a0 Capture another recording at a later time and compare the two recordings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a title=\"Spell with Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/metaatem.net\/words\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Spell with Flickr<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; I love this when I&#8217;m in need of some kind of catchy block title images. It stands out better than relying on fonts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/imagine_title1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"imagine_title\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/imagine_title1.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"21\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How would I use it?<\/strong>\u00a0Select words out of writing or connect those words using a visual thesaurus like\u00a0<a title=\"Lexipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/lexipedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lexipedia<\/a>. \u00a0In\u00a0<em>Spell with Flickr<\/em>, generate the letters by clicking through a selection of alphabets pulled from Flickr images. \u00a0Capture the image and use in blog writing or other writing pieces that need a word to boldly stand out. \u00a0In the example above, I chose the word &#8216;imagine&#8217; to represent all the possibilities of creativity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a title=\"Draw a Stickman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drawastickman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Draw a Stickman<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0&#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0This creative site tells a story by including your sketches. \u00a0Sketch a &#8220;<em>stickman<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0Watch how the story unfolds.<br \/>\n<strong>How I would use it?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0provides a twist for those moments when you&#8217;re stuck in writers block. \u00a0Rather than have students wander the room, \u00a0create something and watch the wheels turn.
