Primary Activity

How Deep in the Ocean? By: Monika Davies

What are the names of the 5 ocean zones?

Can you name 1 thing that lives in each zone?

List some things that happen as you move from each zone, going deeper under the water.

What abilities do deep ocean creatures have to help them survive?

On a piece of paper, use the information in the book to help you draw the different ocean zones and the animals that live in each. Colour your animals using wax crayons. Use water colour paint or pencil crayons to paint in the water with lighter/brighter paint at the water surface moving to darker/deeper colours as you paint down to each ocean zone.

** Challenge: Can you add a depth scale to the side of your drawing showing the measurements for each zone?

Intermediate Activity

Plastic Ahoy!: Investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

By: Patricia Newman

What did you learn about life on a research ship?

 What is a gyre?

Explain what the “plastic patch” is.

What did these researchers find?

How are their findings helpful?

Create a flyer to educate people about the “Plastic Patch”. What can they do to help?
