Before reading, preview the book together. You may wish to do a picture walk or a word walk. [click here to read more<\/a>]<\/p>\n In these videos of parents reading with their children, you can see that there are many different ways of reading together, from the different ways people choose to sit, to varied approaches to looking at text. There are lots of amazing examples of strategies and actions that adults can use when reading with children. Many thanks to the volunteers in these videos!<\/p>\n Examples of Reading Strategies<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n This video<\/a> features examples of sounding out words (0:08), using text and image clues (0:27),\u00a0 using friendly or known words (1:23), using dictionary tools (2:24).<\/p>\n Adult Moves to Support Reading<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n This video<\/a> features actions adults can make to support reading, including demonstrating interest and curiosity (0:06), the use of repetition (0:29), prompting (1:46), pointing to the text and asking questions (2:15), and celebrating successes (3:00).<\/p>\n The Reading Block Game<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n This video<\/a> shows a reading game using blocks that you and your child may enjoy.<\/p>\n Audio books provide the same benefits as reading a book, but also allow for readers to experience sound of the French language while benefiting from the expression used by the narrator(s). Check out the Burnaby Public Library\u2019s website<\/a>\u00a0for more information about using OverDrive\u2019s app, Libby, to access e-books and audiobooks. You can also find audiobooks on the\u00a0Radio Canada site<\/a> \u2013 just scroll down to find \u201cDivertir les petits\u201d (children\u2019s section). Boukili<\/a> and Tumblebooks<\/a> are other sources of free audiobooks.<\/p>\n Students in French immersion are not formally taught how to read in English, but they are encouraged to practice and learn at home. Practice reading in one language can support reading skills in another language. The Burnaby Public Library has put together a booklist – Learning to Read<\/a>.
