Setting up for Success – Time Management

Projects often mean that students are working on something for a longer stretch of time. This is where time management comes into play.

It can be helpful to use a calendar be plan ahead. A student can block off days they know they won’t be able to work on the project – days with lessons, activities and outings. This will help them visualize how much time they really have to work on their project.

It can also help to set smaller goals for completing a project, along with target dates for finishing.

As an example, a student may be asked to write an essay using the timeframe shown in the calendar image. This would involve planning an outline, writing the essay, and then taking time after to review and refine their work in 23 days. They could aim to complete an outline in 5 days, write their essay in 15 days, leaving them with 3 days to refine their work. This helps students avoid writing the whole composition the night before it is due.
