or <a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/words_cloud.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/words_cloud.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a>how  content can be successfully understood.\u00a0 Teachers know that  comprehension is dependent on many variables, one of which is the  readability level of information whether online or in print.\u00a0 It matters  little if you have the best list of websites for research but the  students have difficulties in decoding or understanding the information.  \u00a0 When students expend enormous cognitive energy in decoding words, the  result is a drop in reading speed, comprehension and higher order  thinking skills.<\/p>\n<p>If you ask students where they find information, they will probably  say &#8216;the internet&#8217;.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if you could help them  fine-tune their searches so that it accommodates their reading levels?\u00a0 <strong>Google<\/strong> has done just that &#8211; click on the <strong>Advanced Search<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/google_advancesearch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/google_advancesearch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/google_advancesearchterms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:.5px solid black\" src=\"http:\/\/digisandbox.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/google_advancesearchterms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a>Record your search terms (eg. &#8220;digital writing&#8221;).\u00a0 In <strong>Reading Level<\/strong>:\u00a0 select &#8216;<em>basic, intermediate or advanced<\/em>&#8216;  results.\u00a0 The selected reading level will filter websites that belong  to that level.\u00a0 As well, a graph will display the percentage of websites  that are assigned to each level.<\/p>\n<p>Readability tools can be found online or as part of writing  software.\u00a0 Each one focuses on specific algorithms to determine the  reading level.\u00a0 Consider using these to support your students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Juicy Studio\" href=\"http:\/\/juicystudio.com\/services\/readability.php\" target=\"_blank\">Juicy Studio: Readability of Websites <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Added Bytes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.addedbytes.com\/code\/readability-score\" target=\"_blank\">Added Bytes &#8211; with readability scores)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Okapi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lefthandlogic.com\/htmdocs\/tools\/okapi\/okapi.php\" target=\"_blank\">OKAPI!<\/a> Readability Statistics and Reading Probe Generators<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Readability Test Tool\" href=\"http:\/\/www.read-able.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Readability Test Tool<\/a> &#8211;
