Especially true when you wish to practice comprehension and engage in group discussions.\u00a0Although there are many options available to you, I will focus on two: ebooks and assistive technology &#8211; Kurzweil3000.<\/p>\n<p>Using\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">e<\/span><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">BOOKS<\/span><\/strong> (or electronic books) is a great access equalizer.\u00a0 Ebooks have become very popular as a part of the multi-literacies approach as it is flexible enough to be used on a computer, or as a download to mp3 players or other readers.\u00a0\u00a0Depending on the actual ebook, students gain the supports of the audio component and\/or a visual component.\u00a0 Audiobooks can be downloaded directly to mp3 players or ipods for a &#8220;read anytime, anywhere&#8221; option.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/books_stack.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-392\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/books_stack.jpg?w=100\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 Books that are organized as &#8216;talking books&#8217; or &#8216;video books&#8217; provide another layer of differentiation &#8211; images.\u00a0 In both cases, students\u00a0no longer have to expend massive brain energy on decoding.\u00a0\u00a0They can practice increasing comprehension along with their classmates.\u00a0 A definite plus on the side of inclusion and social emotional development.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#008000\">WHERE OH WHERE?:\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong>You can find many sources for ebooks online.\u00a0 Try: <a href=\"www.audioowl.com\/ \" target=\"_blank\">AudioOwl,<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"www.planetebook.com\/ \" target=\"_blank\">Planet ebook<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"etc.usf.edu\/lit2go\/index.htm \" target=\"_blank\">Lit2Go<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"www.speakaboos.com\/ \" target=\"_blank\">Speakaboos<\/a>\u00a0(with closed caption),\u00a0 <a href=\"www.sciencebooksonline.info\/ \" target=\"_blank\">Science books online <\/a>(secondary),\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"librivox.org\/ \" target=\"_blank\">LibriVox<\/a>.\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/delicious.com\/beyondtech1\/ebooks\" target=\"_blank\">delicious account<\/a> for a longer list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.sd41.bc.ca\/QuickPlace\/learningtech\/PageLibrary88257646006DB5E8.nsf\/h_Toc\/f27865e831333423882576480070fa5b\/?OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong>Kurzweil 3000<\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong> <\/strong>is part of the assistive technology wave.\u00a0 It is a software program that has many applications: reads almost anything in digital formats (whether they are downloaded or on the web), has a study skills component with highlighters and post-it note functions, a writing\/editing portion\u00a0with a word prediction dictionary<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/my-pc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-395\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/my-pc.jpg?w=150\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/my-pc.jpg 256w, https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/fastforword\/files\/2010\/01\/my-pc-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a> that can be individualized.\u00a0As well, for the teacher, there is a handy option of adding popup comprehension prompts (which the student must answer) directly within the reading material &#8211; what a bonus!\u00a0 The intent here is again, access.\u00a0 Students can participate fully\u00a0in classroom related activities like Literature Circles, or Social Studies research and debates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#008000\">WHERE OH WHERE?:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>Many resources have already been developed for use with Kurzweil.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arc-bc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ArcBC<\/a> has\u00a0been compiling\u00a0e-text resources &#8211; you need an account to use it.\u00a0 (*Please notify your district Learning\u00a0Support Services\u00a0teacher to help you with\u00a0this\u00a0site.)\u00a0\u00a0If you are interested in\u00a0Kurzweil and how it integrates into the classroom or school, please <a href=\"mailto:janet.chow@sd41.bc.ca\" target=\"_self\">email me<\/a>\u00a0or any member of our district Learning Technologies team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do we help students with their reading\u00a0in the classroom or in LSS while they are moving through Fast ForWord?\u00a0 There are times when having access to the same reading materials as everyone else is important.
