Students new to the Burnaby School District are assessed by the Welcome Centre if they:
- have spent 4 years or less in a native-English speaking school system or received ELL support in previous school
- speak languages in addition to English
As students are building proficiency in multiple languages, gaps may occur. A language assessment will help your child’s school get an accurate picture of your child’s language ability and to provide support if needed.
It is important to assess all new incoming students at the Welcome Centre:
-
- to ensure consistency in the assessment of new ELL students so that appropriate supports can be put into place
- to ensure that the school has an accurate representation of your child’s English ability so teachers are not overestimating or underestimating their proficiency
- to connect parents/guardians with settlement workers and provide them with orientation to school and community resources
Currently:
- Remote assessments done through Zoom
- Limited number of in-person appointments available
