This year, the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS) is implementing a high school component to our annual flagship event, the Feeding 9 Billion Case Competition. Please register your team via email by October 27, 11:59pm

Event Summary:

The Feeding 9 Billion Case Competition encourages students to look for solutions to sustainably, equitably, and nutritiously feed the world’s growing population. Students will collaborate and push the boundaries of traditional ways of thinking to solve pressing concerns related to food security, agriculture, and global hunger. To participate in Feeding 9 Billion, high school students can register individually with you (or another staff designate), to form teams of 3-5 students from Grades 10-12. We are hoping to recruit one team per high school, creating a competition of at least five teams from different high schools across the lower mainland. Once you have confirmed the individuals participating on your school’s team, we ask that you collect their contact information, in order to pass this on to LFS Student Services.

High school teams will prepare a seven-minute in-person presentation of a proposed project, which can include a business plan, an education program, or other initiative, in response to the competition prompt. Students will have the opportunity to work with mentors from UBC and the wider community. All university and high school teams will present their work to a live panel of judges comprised of UBC faculty members and experts, and partake in a Q&A to further articulate their vision. This will give the high school students a unique opportunity to watch and learn from their university student counterparts and observe what university level critical thinking entails. High school teams will compete against each other, and the winning team will receive a prize and be featured in the Faculty newsletter, gaining the unique opportunity to share their findings and present their solutions with faculty members, alumni, and the broader community.

Timeline:

The competition will begin when the case prompt is released, (tentatively set for Monday, November 6th), and conclude on Sunday, November 26th when the in-person presentations will be held at UBC. In the weeks prior to the presentation, high school teams will be expected to work on their own time to prepare their proposals, with the virtual support of UBC mentors.

Please confirm your student team by emailing us at lfs.ambassador@ubc.ca by Friday, October 27th, 2023.
