{"id":320,"date":"2021-06-22T10:22:39","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T17:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/?p=320"},"modified":"2021-06-21T22:23:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T05:23:14","slug":"summer-is-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/2021\/06\/summer-is-here\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer is here!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/files\/2021\/06\/blackboard-2192605_640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-325 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/files\/2021\/06\/blackboard-2192605_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>As you count down the last days of school, you may need some suggestions with what to do with all of the extra time you are about to have.\u00a0 Not to worry, I have done a little research and here are some (mostly outdoor) activities for the many hours you will now have to yourself.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/canada-day.html\">Canada Day.<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 To start off, July 1 is Canada Day! Although this year will be a bit different, there are still opportunities to celebrate with your own families.\u00a0 The City of New Westminster is even offering a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newwestcity.ca\/canada-day-2021\">Canada Day Kit<\/a> (registration required) that includes activities and supplies to help celebrate.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnabyvillagemuseum.ca\/\">Burnaby Village Museum.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 This is an outdoor heritage museum located nearby, just off of Canada Way.\u00a0 Admission is free and online reservations are required in advance.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanvaf.com\/art-downtown\">Art Downtown.<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 The Vancouver Visual Art Foundation has an outdoor summer program that exhibits art, along with the artists and live music in a few locations downtown.\u00a0 This would be a great opportunity to see some artwork outside, interact with artists and even learn about different techniques used in their creations.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnaby.ca\/Things-To-Do\/Explore-Outdoors\/Play-Areas\/Wading-and-Spray-Pads.html\">Spray Parks and Wading Pools.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em> Yes you can reserve times at swimming pools, but if you just want a quick trip to the park to cool off and play, spray parks are the way to go!\u00a0 They are located all over the lower mainland including Burnaby and close by in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newwestcity.ca\/parks-and-recreation\/parks\/community-parks\">New Westminster<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversbestplaces.com\/top-attractions\/vancouvers-best-beaches\/\">Beaches.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em> I will almost always include the beach for any outdoor activity.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so great for exploring, relaxing, swimming and playing! What&#8217;s not to love?<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Yoga.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 There are a number of free online yoga classes that you can watch to get some exercise on a rainy day, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/cosmickidsyoga\">Cosmic Kids Yoga<\/a> on Youtube. The instructor, Jaime, tells stories during her online classes, incorporating the yoga postures.\u00a0 If you would rather do some yoga outside, checkout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matcollective.com\/\">matcollective.com<\/a> that offers free or by donation yoga classes around the lower mainland.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Volunteer.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 A great way to learn some skills and support your community is to volunteer.\u00a0 Although there aren&#8217;t as many positions available this year you can always find some opportunities to help through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnaby.ca\/things-to-do\/volunteering.html\">City of Burnaby <\/a>or help with <a href=\"https:\/\/shorelinecleanup.ca\/\">shoreline clean-up.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Greenways.<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 Throughout the lower mainland there are many trails and areas to explore nature right in the middle of our busy cities.\u00a0 There are a number of spots perfect for walking or biking, including greenways in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnv.org\/parks-recreation-and-culture\/parks-and-greenways\/greenways\">North Vancouver<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.ca\/streets-transportation\/greenways-for-walking-and-cycling.aspx\">Vancouver<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnaby.ca\/Things-To-Do\/Explore-Outdoors\/Nature-Trails-And-Walks.html\">Burnaby<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidevancouver.ca\/2020\/11\/09\/how-to-try-geocaching-in-vancouver\/\">Geocaching<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/em> This is something I haven&#8217;t yet tried, but I really want to give it a shot this summer!\u00a0 Basically it is like a giant, outdoor, world wide treasure hunt.\u00a0 You can download an application such as this<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/play\"> one<\/a> and use GPS coordinates to find little &#8220;treasures&#8221; that you can take as long as you leave items behind of equal value. This is something that can be done with friends, family or on your own!<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">READ!\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em> Yes of course I was going\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-323 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/files\/2021\/06\/park-3396705_640-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/files\/2021\/06\/park-3396705_640-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/brantford-library\/files\/2021\/06\/park-3396705_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>to include this! But you can read almost anywhere: the park, a beach, your backyard.\u00a0 You can start up a weekly book club that meets in a park or find a cozy spot to read by yourself.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget, the Burnaby Public Library has a summer reading club that they put on every year in conjunction with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bcsrc.ca\/\">BC public libraries<\/a>. The theme this year is &#8220;Crack the Case&#8221; and you can participate online or pick up your supplies in person.\u00a0 Included is also an additional summer challenge and the opportunity to write the ending to a mystery play called <a href=\"https:\/\/bcsrc.ca\/greenthumb\/\"><em>Misadventure at the Lighthouse<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whatever you decide to do this summer, stay safe and try something new!
