{"id":2539,"date":"2017-12-19T09:31:48","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T16:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/?p=2539"},"modified":"2017-12-20T17:19:48","modified_gmt":"2017-12-21T00:19:48","slug":"and-the-winner-is-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/2017\/12\/19\/and-the-winner-is-5\/","title":{"rendered":"And the winner is&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the votes are in and we have chosen our Canadian Picture Book of the Year.&nbsp; South Slope has selected <strong>We found a Hat<\/strong> by Jon Klassen as the winner!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/A1V38yW3kaL.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"354\"><\/p>\n<p>We chose this book because&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pictures can tell the words and because the eyes of the turtles can make me laugh.<\/li>\n<li>The author made unique illustrations because he made the turtles shell patterns different from each other.<\/li>\n<li>It makes me feel like that other turtle who wants the hat to tell the truth of why he really wants the hat!<\/li>\n<li>The pictures match the words and the pictures tell the story on their own. I also think it is very funny. (I like it very very much!)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>It makes me feel happy because it reminds me of my dad since he always wears a hat.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>It has powerful words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In close second place was <strong>Town is by the Sea<\/strong> by Joanne Schwartz and pictures by Sydney Smith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/61cOLYxwe6L._SY374_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"309\"><\/p>\n<p>We chose this book because&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It makes me a little sad. I go to the graveyard to visit my grandfather, my father&#8217;s father.&nbsp; He was a miner, too.<\/li>\n<li>It reminds me that my town is by the sea.&nbsp; And it is a peaceful book.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>It has unique and creative illustrations.&nbsp; It makes me remember that I used to live by the sea.<\/li>\n<li>I feel that I&#8217;m in the book and it repeats.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The pictures make me feel calm.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We enjoyed reading and talking about the other books as well.&nbsp; <strong>When we were Alone<\/strong>&nbsp;was recently voted a winner&nbsp;in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbooks.ca\/#winners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governor General Literary Awards<\/a>. <strong>The Snow Knows<\/strong> was named the <a href=\"http:\/\/bookcentre.ca\/programs\/awards\/marilyn-baillie-picture-book-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marilyn Baillie Picture Book of the Year<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to reading more great Canadian picture books next year!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the votes are in and we have chosen our Canadian Picture Book of the Year.&nbsp; South Slope has selected We found a Hat by Jon Klassen as the winner!&nbsp; We chose this book because&#8230; The pictures can tell the words and because the eyes of the turtles can make me laugh.
