The<\/strong>\u00a0Reading<\/strong>\u00a0Club began October 3rd<\/strong>! Every student and staff member at South Slope\/ BCSD is automatically a member of the club.\u00a0 This year we want to continue to put the focus on community and recognition.<\/p>\n

When your child student completes their reading record form, s\/he\u00a0returns the form to school<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0receives a new form<\/strong>.\u00a0 Students will be\u00a0recognized individually<\/strong>\u00a0on a bulletin board in the school and as a group at our Celebration of Learning assemblies.\u00a0 Students who complete\u00a0250 nights<\/strong>\u00a0of reading before the end of June will have a\u00a0book dedicated to them<\/strong>and placed in our school library.<\/p>\n

This year our goal\u00a0continues to be\u00a0to help kids develop a love of reading and read for fun. “Children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers, according to new research from the Institute of Education (IOE).The IOE study, which is believed to be the first to examine the effect of reading for pleasure on cognitive development over time, found that children who read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling between the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read.” To read the whole article click\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We can’t do this without support at home.\u00a0 Parents can help by encouraging their child to read every night (or be read to) for a\u00a0minimum of 15 minutes\u00a0<\/strong>and then sign the reading record form.\u00a0 Make this a special time for you and your child, talk to them about their reading and model good habits by reading yourself.<\/p>\n
