What went well? What would we do differently next time?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/files\/2012\/09\/reflections2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-886\" alt=\"reflections2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/files\/2012\/09\/reflections2.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/files\/2012\/09\/reflections1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-885\" alt=\"reflections1\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/southslope-library\/files\/2012\/09\/reflections1.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students thought using PowerPoint helped focus their presentation and they appreciated the time they had to prepare and practise, but still more time would have helped some students.\u00a0 Some students liked the graphic organizers, some did not.\u00a0 They found the research difficult at times and asked for better websites.\u00a0 In future more students would like to present on the &#8220;big screen&#8221;, rather than using the computers.<\/p>\n<p>What were the important things they learned?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Many water issues facing developing countries<\/li>\n<li>Water has a huge role in the quality of life in developing countries<\/li>\n<li>The First World needs to help the third world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What did the teachers think?<\/p>\n<p>What went well?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mr. Saini&#8217;s tech lessons in the lab<\/li>\n<li>having the time to plan with each other and the district staff<\/li>\n<li>creating the graphic organizers for note taking<\/li>\n<li>having the calendar and the resources on the library blog<\/li>\n<li>time to be in the lab and library with TL, using library space when TL not there<\/li>\n<li>more engagement for some students, the technology was a great hook<\/li>\n<li>peer assessment and checklist<\/li>\n<li>students presented to peers, teachers, parents (student led conferences), district teachers, principal etc; they had authentic audiences for their projects<\/li>\n<li>integrating and linking this project to Me to We, author visit with Eric Walters, Read Aloud\u00a0<em>Alexandria of Africa<\/em>, public speaking contest, Mad Science and more<\/li>\n<li>students helping and teaching each other with the technology; collaboration and cooperation<\/li>\n<li>students developed an understanding of their city and the world as it relates to water<\/li>\n<li>students can use the skills they learned and apply them to future inquiry projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What would we do differently?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more modelling and explicit teaching (evaluating and synthesizing information)<\/li>\n<li>more emphasis on inquiry and answering our essential question<\/li>\n<li>more time to work together and for the students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, what did we do with all our knowledge about clean water and how it affects the lives of people in developing countries? April 12th was our water fundraiser.\u00a0 The grade 7 students, as part of their &#8220;Me to We&#8221; project, raised funds to help children in Kenya through author Eric Walter&#8217;s charity <a href=\"http:\/\/creationofhope.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Creation of Hope<\/a>. Students carried 4L milk jugs full of water around the school with the rest of the students cheering them on.\u00a0 Students raised over $350!
