We Give Books

“We Give Books is a new digital initiative that enables anyone with access to the Internet to put books in the hands of children who don’t have them, simply by reading online.

We Give Books combines the joy of reading with the power of helping others, providing a platform for caregivers and educators to inspire children to become lifelong readers and lifelong givers.

We Give Books also helps some of the world’s best, most inspiring, literacy organizations by spreading the word about their great work and by providing books to the young people these organizations support.” www.wegivebooks.org

Several classes at South Slope/ BCSD have or will be reading books from this site in the library.  The images are excellent and classes have enjoyed being able to see the pictures in large format on the interactive whiteboard. Ask Divisions 6 and 7 about Blue Chicken by Deborah Freedman, a new book in the library that we read online last week.  Division 9 read Henry and the Valentine Surprise by Nancy Carlson.

Click here to go to the site, read a book online and help others, too.

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

To all the parents who volunteered at the Scholastic Book Fair.  It was a big success.  All proceeds will go to purchase resources for the library.

Mrs. Araujo 🙂

Welcome to Kindergarten May 27th

Tomorrow afternoon our school will welcome future kindergarten students and their families to our school.  There will be storytimes, playdough, movement and much more! We are very excited to meet everyone and have fun.

YRCA Voting is Complete!

Over 30 students in Divisions 1-5 participated in the Young Reader’s Choice Awards this year.  Students read at least 2 books in the junior and/or intermediate categories and then voted on their favourite.

South Slope’s #1 Choice with 20 votes was Amulet. Book one, The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi.

I wonder what book will be the winner?

Earth Day Movie

Looking for a good movie to see on Earth Day?  Read this article from School Library Journal.  They recommend a new Disney movie, African Cats,  being released Earth Day, April 22nd.  Check out the movie site for a preview and more.  I’m hoping to add the books mentioned in the article to our library soon.

Tips for Talking to Kids about Japan's Earthquake

“It’s always hard to know what—and how much—to tell children when disaster strikes, and Japan’s earthquake and tsunami is no exception.”                             SLJ March 17, 2011

Read this article from School Library Journal for tips about talking with kids about the events in Japan.  It also includes some recommended books, some of which we have in the library.  Come and see Ms. Araujo in the library to check them out.

150 Nights of Reading

Just a reminder that 150 nights of reading forms are due this Friday, March 11th if you want to be recognized at the March 18th assembly at 2pm.  Keep on reading!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a great success!  Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped with the fair and to all the families who bought books.  Our profits will be used to support our library and other literacy initiatives.
