DANCE FOUNDATIONS 11<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Dance Foundations 11<\/strong> is ideal for beginner to intermediate dancers, and no previous experience is required.<\/span> This course focuses on all aspects of performance. Through basic warm-ups, across-the-floor exercises, and teacher- or student-led choreography, students develop foundational technique to improve strength, flexibility, stamina, balance, and coordination.<\/p>\n

A key emphasis of this course is building strong performance qualities in every piece learned. Progressive lessons help students work effectively in both small groups and larger ensembles. Throughout the year, students collaborate to refine one full-class dance piece, which will be performed at the Year End Dance Recital.<\/p>\n

Please note that students who take a dance class in grade 10, 11, and 12 will be eligible for a dance scholarship upon graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DANCE CREW 11<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Dance Crew 11<\/strong> is designed for students interested in exploring urban dance styles, including Hip Hop, Tutting, Locking, and Breaking. No previous experience is required.<\/span> This course is ideal for beginner to intermediate dancers, with optional skill extensions available for more advanced students.<\/p>\n

Classes include warm-ups, team-building activities, small-group movement explorations, and technique development. Through a progressive approach, students will build strength, flexibility, stamina, balance, and coordination. In addition to technical growth, students will develop confidence, trust, and leadership skills as they learn to work collaboratively.<\/p>\n

Students will create and refine choreography in pairs, small groups, and as a full class in preparation for the Year End Dance Recital.<\/p>\n

Please note that students who take a dance class in grade 10, 11, and 12 will be eligible for a dance scholarship upon graduation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"DANCE COMPANY 11 (by audition) <\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Dance Company 11<\/strong>\u00a0is designed for students who are highly motivated and have\u00a0extensive previous dance training\u00a0or experience in styles such as Contemporary, Lyrical, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, or Breakdance. It is recommended that students also take an additional dance class, such as Dance Foundations, Dance Crew, or an after-school dance course, to continue building technical skills.<\/p>\n

The class is divided into two groups: one focusing on Hip Hop technique and the other on Contemporary technique. Students also have opportunities to create their own choreography, which may be included in future performances. Dance Company participates in a large group piece and smaller group projects to be performed at both the Burnaby Festival of Dance and the Year End Dance Recital.<\/p>\n

Auditions for this course take place in\u00a0January<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE 11 (Yes for 2026\/7!)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Musical Theatre Dance 11<\/strong>\u00a0is a 4-credit course offered during years when Burnaby South produces a large musical, which occurs every second year.\u00a0No prior experience or prerequisite is required.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students in this course learn multiple dance numbers as part of a large ensemble of dancers and actors. Dancers work closely with actors, musicians, and production students as they prepare for the final school musical, which typically runs in March.<\/p>\n

Sessions take place after school at least twice a week. This course also qualifies toward the scholarship requirement.<\/p>\n

Please note that students who take a dance class in grade 10, 11, and 12 will be eligible for a dance scholarship upon graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"DANCE LEADERSHIP 11 (By Permission)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dance Leadership 11<\/strong> is intended for students who have previously taken dance courses at Burnaby South and are ready to take on a mentorship role within the Dance Program. Students should have a foundational understanding of how the dance studio operates and be able to represent the Burnaby South Dance Program in a positive and professional manner.<\/p>\n

Students may be paired with a dance class where they will learn to lead warm-ups, assist with choreography, support classroom management, and problem-solve various situations that may arise. In some cases, students may work directly with the teacher during an independent leadership block, helping with costumes, organization, choreography, and other behind-the-scenes responsibilities. Select students may also have opportunities to develop special solo or small-group projects.<\/p>\n

This course is designed to build confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills while strengthening students\u2019 understanding of dance education from both a performer and instructor perspective.<\/p>\n

\"\"WORLD DANCE 11: <\/span><\/b><\/span>(Not offered 2026\/7)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

World Dance 11<\/strong>\u00a0is a 4-credit after-school course open to students in Grades 9\u201312, with Grade 8 students welcome to participate as club members.\u00a0No previous dance experience is required.<\/p>\n

Students explore a variety of world dance styles, which may include Bhangra, Tahitian, Tinikling, Hawaiian, Broadway Jazz, Musical Theatre, and M\u0101ori Poi. Throughout the course, students learn dance technique, choreography, cultural history, and additional elements such as costuming and performance skills.<\/p>\n

Students may be invited to perform at school and community events, including the Year End Dance Recital. This course is offered every other year.<\/p>\n

\"\"DANCE PRODUCTION 11 (after school)<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Dance Production 11<\/strong>\u00a0is a credit course for students in Grades 9\u201312.\u00a0There is no dancing involved in this course.\u00a0Students gain hands-on experience in the behind-the-scenes work required to run school productions, including the Year End Dance Recital. This course is co-taught by Ms. Wilson, Ms. Dewar, and Mr. Hobbes and in conjunction with Theatre Production, giving students a wide range of opportunities in technical theatre and production design.<\/p>\n

Students choose one specialized\u00a0crew<\/strong>\u00a0to work in:<\/p>\n

Stage Management Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Oversees the entire production from start to finish, ensuring all crews stay on schedule. Stage managers also work backstage during performances to keep everything running smoothly.<\/p>\n

Marketing Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Designs posters, websites, social media content, tickets, and show merchandise. This crew promotes productions in the school and community and assists with fundraising and donation collection.<\/p>\n

Set Design Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Creates scenery and painted backdrops for productions. Students work together to build creative set pieces based on the needs of each show.<\/p>\n

Props Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Designs or sources all handheld items performers use onstage\u2014from themed umbrellas to glow-in-the-dark props.<\/p>\n

Costumes Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Designs, assembles, and organizes costumes. Ideal for students interested in fashion, sewing, or garment construction.<\/p>\n

Lighting Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Learns to use stage lighting equipment, haze machines, and digital programming to create atmosphere for each performance. Works closely with Stage Management and Sound.<\/p>\n

Sound Crew:<\/strong>\u00a0Operates the soundboard, collects sound effects, programs cues, and runs audio during productions. Collaborates closely with Lighting and Stage Management.<\/p>\n

Dance Production counts toward the Dance Scholarship requirement. Students who take a dance course in Grades 10, 11, and 12 automatically qualify for consideration, with up to\u00a0$2000<\/strong>\u00a0awarded each year.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
