Ms. Higgins read a beautiful and powerful\u00a0book by Jacqueline Woodson titled\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Other Side<\/strong><\/span> inwhich\u00a0two young girls in\u00a0their own way\u00a0defy the\u00a0segregation in the southern United States and\u00a0create a friendship.\u00a0She also read <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Oscar Lives Next Door<\/span><\/strong> by Bonnie Farmer and Marie Lafrance which is a story inspired by Oscar Peterson&#8217;s childhood. Oscar Peterson was a world famous Jazz pianist and his childhood story is one of resiliency. Intermediate classes learned about Viola Desmond, often referred to as Canada&#8217;s Rosa Parks. Students viewed two video clips and did a compare and contrast activity of the two women.
