Science At Home

Here are some ideas for science activities, experiments and explorations that can be done at home, including some links for more details and further learning:

Coffee Filter Chromatography

Use a simple coffee filter and some pens around the house to explore chromatography–the separation of the ink colours in pens. You can use water as the solvent for a safer experiment.  More details on how to do this can be found here.

Soup Can Race

In a race between cream of mushroom and chicken noodle, who will win? More ideas for junior scientists here  but this can even be expanded to senior science here. And you can eat your apparatus when doing all this science works up an appetite.

M and M Diffusion

M and M’s are a great entryway to inquiry. Just pour some water, place some candies, and see what happens. The magic is in thinking of more questions to ask, and more experiments to do. There are q’s that work for K-12 in this exp’t. Great ideas here.
