Writing), research projects may require other, more detailed bibliographic information for sources and\/or require a wider variety of sources for research than inquiry projects from other courses.\u00a0 The sites below will help you to be an organised researcher and find the information you need to correctly cite your work.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong><em>NOTE:\u00a0 As of 2022, MLA9 and APA7 are the newest formats for these style systems.\u00a0 Check with your teacher if they want you to use these OR if they prefer you to use MLA8 and APA6.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3>Help Organising Your Workflow &amp; Planning<\/h3>\n<p>Whether your research\/inquiry project will need several weeks or months, it&#8217;s best to organise well in advance so you are not surprised by the impending due date and scrambling to complete work that should take days in only hours.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/calculator.lib.sfu.ca\/\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">https:\/\/calculator.lib.sfu.ca\/<\/span><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Assignment Calculator.\u00a0 No matter how well you do your research, if you don&#8217;t plan your time well for large (research) projects, you will struggle at the end to finish well on time.\u00a0 The calculator can help you to &#8216;chunk&#8217; out your time so that you don&#8217;t forget to consider important steps when you are planning your entire project timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.library.ubc.ca\/\">UBC Library Research Help Page<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Includes links to tools like assignment calculators, citation management software comparisons and help guides, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180506210747\/https:\/\/guides.library.ubc.ca\/ld.php?content_id=33891086\">research paper prep sheets<\/a>, search tips, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/methods.sagepub.com\/project-planner\">Sage Project Planner<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>While the videos here are locked to registered users only (check with your public\/university library to see if you have access), the text and transcripts are available without signing in.\u00a0 This breaks down the entire planning process into granular steps.\u00a0 It could be used as a resource to guide you through the entire process OR to help you get through a difficult stage in your progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Manage your Sources<\/h3>\n<p>Before you start finding all sorts of sources for your research, decide how you are going to <u>keep records<\/u> of the sources you find so you are not left digging through your browser history at 3am the morning your paper is due trying to find that database article you relied on but can&#8217;t cite.\u00a0 Generally, whether you are taking notes by hand or digitally, it is best practice to put the complete bibiliographic entry at the top of the page you&#8217;re taking notes on so you always know which source the notes originate from.\u00a0 This avoids confusion when you&#8217;re writing and prevents sloppy referencing errors late in the process which can result in plagiarism and its consequences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybib.com\/\">https:\/\/mybib.com<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>A free online bibliography and citation generator that requires you create a login to keep your list available online.\u00a0 This one is NOT owned by Chegg and is NOT full of ads.\u00a0 Create a login to be able to organise your sources by project and to maintain cloud access.\u00a0 This will organise your sources but does NOT have a plug-in for your word processor to help automate the in-text citation process.\u00a0 It will provide you with the format for the in-text citation for a specific source, but you&#8217;re responsible for copying\/pasting it into the correct locations.\u00a0 This is the type of citation app most recommended for junior courses and projects (e.g. Science Fair, Languages country profiles).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/<\/span><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Zotero is reference management software: a form of software that helps you to organise your citations, both within the text you write (in-text citations) and in the final bibliography.\u00a0 It is more powerful than tools like mybib.com because it also helps you to integrate your citations into your writing and keep track of the references you actually use as opposed to the ones you have just read and kept in your source list.\u00a0 Zotero is open source and always free.\u00a0 It now includes the option to sync your sources between devices, but does not exist in the cloud (requires individual setup on devices for synching OR running the program from an external drive you can move from computer to computer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/support\/kb\/using_multiple_computers\">https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/support\/kb\/using_multiple_computers<\/a> ).<\/li>\n<li>If you install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/download\/\">Zotero Connector<\/a> (browser extension), you can add sources you find online directly into your Zotero Library.<\/li>\n<li>If you install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/support\/word_processor_integration\">Word Processor Plugin<\/a> (available for Word, LibreOffice, GDocs), you can use it to add\/manage in-text citations and to generate a bibliography based on which sources you have referenced in-text.\u00a0 It is a huge time saver.<\/li>\n<li>Zotero can also help you find articles that aren&#8217;t behind a paywall.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1597548020887089152.html\">Try the workflow suggested by @MushtaqBilalPHD<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.endnote.com\/\">https:\/\/my.endnote.com\/<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>EndNote Online (also called EndNote basic) is the free, cloud version of EndNote owned by Clarivate (a large research &amp; publishing company).\u00a0 If you install the desktop software, it can also sync your references.\u00a0 Like Zotero, it is a full reference management tool.\u00a0 The free version is a newer offering from this company but exists entirely in the cloud, so you can access it from any device with a web browser.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/reference-management\/reference-manager\">https:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/reference-management\/reference-manager<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Mendeley Reference Manager is another reference management package, owned by Elsevier (another large research &amp; publishing company).\u00a0 Its website provides little easily accessible documentation, but it is reportedly similar to EndNote.\u00a0 It is compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux, though details about it&#8217;s cloud\/synching features are hard to locate on its official site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.sfu.ca\/find\/research-tools\/citation-software\">Citation Management Software and Tools<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>SFU maintains a list of citation management tools that its Library staff support.\u00a0 If this is your intended post-secondary school, it may be worthwhile seeing which systems they have invested time into supporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ubc.ca\/c.php?g=707700&amp;p=5037583\">Citation Management<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>UBC&#8217;s support page for management tools is more comprehensive and also includes this helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/research-commons-2019.sites.olt.ubc.ca\/files\/2019\/11\/CM_ComprisonTable_Printer_20191031.pdf\">chart comparing the tools<\/a> (keep in mind the cost notations only apply to UBC students).\u00a0 If this is your intended post-secondary school, it may be worthwhile seeing which systems they have invested time into supporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Advanced Search Skills<\/h3>\n<p>There is more to effective searching than finding the right keywords (though that\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> vital).\u00a0 Learn the computer commands that search engines rely upon to help you filter the millions of results to be more useful and relevant.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/north-library\/files\/2019\/10\/advanced-search-bookmarks.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advanced Google Search Skills (paper reference bookmark of operators)<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>These commands are known as &#8216;search syntax&#8217; and often work on several search engines (yes!\u00a0 there are others!).\u00a0 \u00a0The little symbols are known as Boolean operators, though Google search doesn&#8217;t always use them the same way as other sites.. The complete list of Google syntax commands are here: <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-advanced-search-operators\/\">https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/google-advanced-search-operators\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you want to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/35890?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid#zippy=%2Cfor-webpages-files\">deep dive into your search on Google<\/a>, use its other services\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/advanced_search\">Advanced Search<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\">Google Scholar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/\">DuckDuckGo<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>If you&#8217;re not finding what you want\/need with Google, try DuckDuckGo.\u00a0 It uses different algorithms, so it prioritizes different hits on the results lists and doesn&#8217;t track your searching for privacy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s advanced search operators are listed here: <a href=\"https:\/\/help.duckduckgo.com\/duckduckgo-help-pages\/results\/syntax\/\">https:\/\/help.duckduckgo.com\/duckduckgo-help-pages\/results\/syntax\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Incorporating Indigenous Sources &amp; Methodologies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.norquest.ca\/IndigenousEducation\/voice\">Locating Indigenous Scholarship<\/a>&#8211;Finding Indigenous sources of research and scholarship via the typical searches of traditional publishing and research can be difficult as their voices are marginalized both by the historic, systemic racism in post-secondary education and in publishing.\u00a0 NorQuest College&#8211;located on Treaty 6 land and based in Edmonton, Alberta&#8211;has compiled a libguide to help scholars more easily locate Indigenous voices.\u00a0 Remember that while authority, relevance, and currency are are important to consider when checking your variety of sources, so is representation.\n<ul>\n<li>If you are hoping to do original research with Elders and Knowledge Keepers (or other members of Indigenous communities), be sure to familiarize yourself with the <a href=\"https:\/\/burnabyschools.ca\/indigenouseducation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/09\/Elders-Guide-V3-FINAL.pdf\">district protocols<\/a> and to contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/burnabyschools.ca\/indigenouseducation\/staff\/\">Indigenous Education staff<\/a> if you need more guidance.\u00a0 Protocols vary from locale to locale, so if your contacts won&#8217;t be local, find sources local to them who can help you learn the protocols you will need to follow to respect and honour their ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For information on\u00a0finding &amp; citing sources of Indigenous knowledge, more schools have created resource guides since NorQuest&#8217;s lead\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ubc.ca\/c.php?g=383361&amp;p=2597590\">UBC&#8217;s Guide to Indigenous Research Methodologies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ubc.ca\/c.php?g=307187&amp;p=5290978\">UBC&#8217;s Guide to Finding Sources by Nation\/Community<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.kpu.ca\/indigenous\/indigenousinformationliteracy\">KPU&#8217;s Indigenous Information Literacy page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.sfu.ca\/help\/academic-integrity\/indigenous-initiatives\/icrc\/indigenous-voices\">SFU&#8217;s Finding Indigenous voices: Approaches for discovering Indigenous scholars and authors<\/a> (includes links to Indigenous Journals, Groups, and Online Communities)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Referencing Styles<\/h3>\n<p>The most commonly used referencing style in secondary school is MLA (Modern Languages Association), as this is the default style in most Humanities subjects at the post-secondary level; it values the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authorship<\/span> of a source as most important.\u00a0 However, if you are in an AP or other advanced course, you may be required to use APA (American Psychological Association) depending on the discipline of study.\u00a0 APA values the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">currency\/year<\/span> of a source as most important and is the usual format in the Sciences and Psychology at the post-secondary level.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/purdue_owl.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Purdue OWL<\/a>\u00a0 The Online Writing Lab from Purdue University. It has lots of great writing, research, and citation tips for all subject areas.\u00a0 It also has resource guides for both MLA and APA formats.\u00a0 There are other sources online for this information, but the PurdueOWL is the most reliably up to date with all the changes that are published.\n<ul>\n<li>If you encounter sources that do not fit nicely into the rules and samples given on general sites like the Purdue OWL, check with the original source:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/style.mla.org\/sections\/ask-the-mla\">Ask the MLA<\/a>&#8211;This is the FAQ site for questions about MLA style and referencing.\u00a0 Check here for answers on your problematic entries.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apastyle.apa.org\/blog\">The APA Style Blog<\/a>&#8211;this site has lots of Q&amp;As about many, many different types of citation and style issues.\u00a0 Check here for answers on your problematic entries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/guestquery\">https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/guestquery<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>This site will help you to locate the DOI for journals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journalseek.net\/\">http:\/\/journalseek.net\/<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>This site will help you to find the names and contact information for journals that may have changed names or moved URL since the edition you are referencing was published.\u00a0 This can be especially helpful if you are working on an APA reference list and are unable to locate the DOI or homepage through other means.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/unpaywall.org\">http:\/\/unpaywall.org\u00a0<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Some journal databases only let you read the abstract of an article for free but require a paid login to access the full-text (this is a paywall).\u00a0 This organisation seeks out open source, legal copies of journal articles so you can read the full text.\u00a0 Their main page lists the open source journals they link to, but they also have a browser extension available for Chrome that will tell you if an unpaywalled version available of the article you&#8217;re looking at in the browser.\n<ul>\n<li><a
