On Wednesday, October 23rd, the library had the pleasure of hosting Gina McMurchy-Barber, author of Vikings Read nominee Free as a Bird. Ms. McMurchy-Barber held a rapt audience of grades 8, 9 and 10 as she discussed her research into Woodlands Institute in New Westminster. In addition to an energetic reading of an excerpt of her book, McMurchy-Barber gave a fascintating presentation of the forgotten past of Woodlands, once know as the “Provincial Asylum of the Insane.”
