{"id":293,"date":"2021-10-12T07:00:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T14:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mental-health-literacy\/?p=293"},"modified":"2021-10-11T23:12:58","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T06:12:58","slug":"mental-health-day-and-mental-health-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mental-health-literacy\/2021\/10\/12\/mental-health-day-and-mental-health-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health Day and Mental Health Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>It&#8217;s October: Mental Health Day and Mental Health Awareness Month!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>World Mental Health Day<\/strong> was first recognized October 10th, 1992.\u00a0 \u00a0 World Mental Health Day started by the World Health Organization to increase awareness and decrease stigma.\u00a0 Now it is about more than advocacy.\u00a0 It is an opportunity to empower people on a global scale to look after their own mental health and provide support to others.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s theme is &#8216;Mental health care for all: let\u2019s make it a reality&#8217;.\u00a0 In BC have access to free community services like the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/mental-health-literacy\/students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foundry, Crisis Centre and more<\/a>.\u00a0 However, there are still gaps in care <em>despite the universal nature and the magnitude of mental ill health, the gap between demand for mental health services and supply remains substantial.\u00a0 The serious gaps that still exist in mental health care are a result of chronic under-investment over many decades in mental health promotion, prevention and care.\u00a0 Stigma, discrimination and human rights abuses of people with mental health conditions remain widespread. On average, countries spend just 2% of their national health budgets on mental health. <\/em>However, there is good news too!\u00a0<em>Some of the most common mental health conditions, depression and anxiety, can be treated with talking therapies, medication, or a combination of these.
