{"id":2282,"date":"2013-01-27T14:49:47","date_gmt":"2013-01-27T21:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/?p=2282"},"modified":"2013-01-27T14:56:37","modified_gmt":"2013-01-27T21:56:37","slug":"informed-choices-for-writing-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/2013\/01\/informed-choices-for-writing-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Informed Choices for Writing Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even though you may love\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/the-classroom\/digital-writing-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\">Writers Workshop<\/a>, the challenge comes in keeping track of all the confer\/revision comments for planning purposes. \u00a0We know that immediate feedback, specific and targeted will support our students\u2019 approximation of great writing. \u00a0How do you keep your ongoing comments on students? <em>(I used to use post-it notes &#8211; hundreds of post-its.)<\/em> \u00a0How do you create target groups to differentiate lessons? \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/web-resource\/google-docs-for-ed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Forms<\/a>\u00a0allows the ability to gather, collate and analyze information, set the stage for targeting mini-lessons, as well as provide a running record of growth for each student. This can be accessed \u00a0 by any computer, mobile device (ipad, iphone\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>Here is my version of a working form based on our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/the-classroom\/digital-writing-workshop\/assessment-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\">BC \u00a0Performance Standards (Informal Writing)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2285 alignnone\" title=\"ww_googleform\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2286 alignnone\" title=\"ww_googleform2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The data populates into a spreadsheet; each column can be sorted so you can group your teaching points. \u00a0Note that the\u00a0<em>Observation<\/em>\u00a0column is using \u2018standards based grading\u2019 [<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Mastery, Progressing, Starting, No evidence<\/em><\/span>] rather than a numeric system. (More on this later in another post) Hover your mouse over the <em>Observation<\/em> column, right click and click Sort. \u00a0Data will be grouped by M, P, S, N &#8211; an easy way to see new groups of students for mini-lessons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform_spreadsht.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2287 alignnone\" title=\"ww_googleform_spreadsht\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2013\/01\/ww_googleform_spreadsht.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This should be called <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;<em>informative assessment&#8221;<\/em><\/span>! \u00a0Imagine how teaching might change with this type of immediate information at your fingertips. \u00a0How are you organizing your comments?
