Mrs. Johnson’s Music Classroom

Students in Grades 1 and 2 have been working on keeping a steady beat in music this term.  Students have explored different ways to keep a beat including through movement (marching, dancing, patting different parts of their bodies) as well as playing instruments.  For Halloween, students learned the song, “Pumpkin Stew.”  Classes started by learning the words to the song and patting the beat along with the words.  From there, we explored the difference between beat and rhythm in music and connected it back to this song.   Following that, students learned an ostinato (a repeating rhythm) along with a variety of actions to accompany the song.  Next, the students were each assigned a rhythm instrument to play to represent the different parts of the ostinato.  The first part of the ostinato was played by the woodblocks, followed by the finger cymbals, egg shakers and finally the jingle rattles.  Every student learned the name of each instrument and how to play it properly.  After a few practices, we put the entire ostinato together and practiced it with a recording of the song “Pumpkin Stew.”  Below are recordings  of each class playing their instruments.

Band testing

Band testing began this week.  Band students are expected to practice and prepare exercise #14 in their Standard of Excellence book.  Students will be evaluated on things such as posture, playing position, embouchure (how they form their mouth around their instrument), notes, rhythm and tonguing.  If any students are having difficulty with their instruments, they are more than welcome to make an appointment to see Mrs. Johnson for some extra help over lunch hour.

Grade 7 Band Instrument Night at Byrne Creek Secondary

Our district instrument night for Grade 7 Band5120yjmhjvl-_sx375_bo1204203200_
students will be held on Tuesday September 20th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.  Parents or guardians  must accompany their child in order to rent their instruments.  Instruments will not be rented to students who are not accompanied by a parent or guardian.  In addition to renting the instrument there, you will also need to buy a red Standard of Excellence exercise book to accompany their instrument.  Please make sure you get the correct book for your instrument.  All of the outside covers looks identical except that the instrument listed at the top is different.

After renting their instrument, each student will need to attend a first lesson session.  The first lesson session will give them an introduction to their instrument.  As well, they will learn how to put their instrument together and how to get their first sounds out of it.  These lessons will begin at 4:15 until 7:00 p.m.  Each lesson will last approximately 30 minutes.  Each student will only need to attend one session.   Please find a copy of the lesson schedule here:  Instrument Rental Night

Interested in joining Grade 7 Band?

Welcome to Grade 7 Band!

If your child is interested in becoming part of the Grade 7 Band, it is not too late to join!  Simply download the registration letter  and instrument selection form, fill them out and sign them and return them to Mrs. Johnson’s letter tray at the West office.  The forms can be found under the Grade 7 Band tab.  Forms will be accepted until Monday September 12th.

Instrument assignments will be posted outside the Band room during the second week of school.  Each student will also be assigned to their rehearsal days that week.   Students will be divided into two different bands, Band A and Band B.  Band A will rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Band B will rehearse on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Please be advised of which rehearsals your child will need to attend.   If your child has a schedule conflict with the rehearsal days he/she has been assigned, please let Mrs. Johnson know.  However, the bands are created so that instruments are divided equally between the two bands.  Too many changes would result in uneven instrumentation (12 flutes in one band and 5 in the other).

The instrument night will be held on Tuesday, September 20th at Byrne Creek Secondary School.  The schedule for that night will be posted on the blog as soon as it is available.  I will be holding an important meeting at lunch during the second week of school for all band students regarding the instrument night and the first week of rehearsals.

The first week of rehearsals will begin on Wednesday September 21st at 8am in the Band room.   During the first week of rehearsals, students will be assigned one rehearsal day depending on which instrument he/she has been assigned. The rehearsal schedule will be posted on the blog and on the Band room door and will also be handed out to the students during their first meeting.

Regular rehearsals for Bands A and B will begin Tuesday, September 27th.

I look forward to a fun and musical year in Band!
