Mrs. Winter has taught Music at Marlborough Elementary School for the past 12 years. After teaching on-call for 7 years in the Burnaby School District, she began teaching Primary Music (Grades K-3) here at Marlborough and has never looked back.
Mrs. Winter’s love of music began at 5 years old when she started playing piano, and in 1991 she graduated from UBC Music Faculty with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. Along with playing piano, Mrs. Winter developed a love of singing, sung in numerous children’s choirs and went on to sing with the UBC Choral Union.
After graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor of Education (French) from UBC and teaching on call, Mrs. Winter found her niche here at Marlborough, where she specializes in teaching young children to develop their singing voices. As well as singing, dance, movement and the Orff instruments make up a big part of her program.
In past years, Mrs. Winter conducted the Primary Choir and is currently accompanist for the Intermediate Choir.
Mrs. Lazaruk joined the teaching staff at Marlborough in September 1998 after completing her Master’s Degreet at UBC in Music Education – focusing on Jazz Education for Elementary students. She was the first woman to graduate from the Bachelor of Music degree program “Jazz Studies” from Capilano University, and has subsequently produced many “Jazz Club” performances over the years. Parents are invited to “Jazz Club” concerts to enjoy the students perform their own jazz compositions, backed up by professional musicians.
Shortly after arriving at Marlborough, Mrs. Lazaruk composed our very own lively song “The Marlborough School Song” and then proceeded to start a costume room. Designing the costumes and recruiting parents to sew them was a daunting task, but added a sense of professionalism to our school concerts. The students are always extremely well received at our District Dance Festivals!
As a child, Mrs. Lazaruk was fortunate to extensively study classical piano, ballet and jazz dance, guitar, and art. She taught private piano for many years and was a choir director for several years at St. Jude’s church in Vancouver.
Mrs. Lazaruk has volunteered extensively in Burnaby. She has led several drum circles for immigrant youth, has helped raise money for our PAC by leading drum activities for donations and helped raise over $4500 a few years ago for the Terry Fox Foundation with her “Drum-a-thon.”
With an extensive background in dance and choreography, Mrs. Lazaruk has led District Teacher Workshops in Dance, Production and Choreography. She has also volunteered as a percussionist for the Burnaby Youth Choir, and has brought 34 djembe drum students to perform for the Burnaby School Board Christmas meeting, which was televised!
As a professional musician and throughout many years of dance and piano competitions, Mrs. Lazaruk works to instill a sense of professionalism within her music class, but her main goal has always been to instill a “lifelong” love for Music, Dance, and Drama to her students at Marlborough.
Mrs. Johnson joined the Marlborough Music team in 2009. Prior to coming to Marlborough, she taught music in the East Kootenays for three years. While in Kimberley, Mrs. Johnson was responsible for rebuilding the music program. She taught General Music at 2 Elementary schools and a Middle school as well as directed 2 extra-curricular Elementary choirs. At the high school, she taught Band, Choir and Guitar. She was involved in numerous school concerts for the community. She was very pleased to see the music program flourishing at the end of her three year stay.
Mrs. Johnson’s interest in music started at the age of 7 when she began taking piano lessons. From there she went on to study music and participate in Band as well as numerous choirs throughout her school career. In 2004, she graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Music and completed her Post Degree Program in teaching in 2005.
In 2008, she started working in the Burnaby school district where she discovered her love for elementary music. Shortly after coming to Burnaby, she completed her Level I Orff Schulwerk training and in 2009, she joined the team at Marlborough teaching Primary and Intermediate music and Grade 7 Band. Currently, she teaches students in Kindergarten to Grade 4 General Music and Grade 7 Band before school. She also accompanies the Primary Choir on Wednesdays at lunch.
