Mrs. Johnson’s Music Class: Ms. Thandal, Mrs. Hirji-Padamshi and Mme. Cosco

Over the past few weeks, students in Grades 2 and 3 have been exploring rhythms based off of the Halloween song, “Monster Stew.”  Students were split up into groups and were given the task to create a list of items that they could put in a monster stew.  However the items they chose had to coordinate with 4 selected rhythms.  Once they had created their list, each group picked their favourite words to share with the class.

Following the rhythm group work, students were assigned various percussion instruments such as Bass, Soprano and Alto Xylophones, Woodblocks, Triangles and Soprano Glockenspiels and learned a 5 part arrangement to accompany the song “Monster Stew.”  Each student learned the notes and rhythms for each instrumental part and were then assigned their own instrumental part.  The result was 5 different rhythmic and melodic patterns all playing at the same time.

Below are recordings of each class playing the 5 part arrangement of “Monster Stew”
