Tumblebooks

Tumblebooks provided mostly online storybooks of interest to K-3 but there are some chapter books and graphic novels some grade 4-7 students may find interesting. Storybooks are read to the students and partially animated. Some of the chapter books can be read aloud and the student can follow along. Some chapter books and the graphic novels are simply for reading online.

Tumblebooks seems to work best with Chrome on a computer but may work well enough on other devices, give it a try. Mobile devices will look and function differently than computers.

If you need a BPL library card to access their online resources call 604-436-5400, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm and the BPL will be able to help you.

BPL list of online storieshttps://www.bpl.bc.ca/kids/online-stories (some require a BPL library card but some are just available openly). I have highlighted 2 of the resources in the list below.

Click on the Read button in the top left to read (not read aloud) one of over 7,000 books available in one of the many languages from the African continent. I counted 165 different languages available! There is an indication of level, ranging from 1-5. The level 1 book I looked at in English was quite low probably for emerging readers and level 5 looked to be up to maybe an early grade 3 level.

Also known as Overdrive or Libby in the app store. Recently the BPL has been working hard to get more chapter books, early readers, picture books and audiobooks for kids in the collection. If you go to the main Overdrive site on a computer, there is a separate Kids link. Copies of resources are limited but you can put a hold on these online books and will be emailed when your book is ready.

This is for Burnaby residents only. If you live in another city, check your city’s public library’s website to find out how to access their Library to Go.
