Battle of the Books (BOTB) will be back in just a few short weeks!

What is it?
BOTB is a grade 6 and 7 district literacy competition sponsored by the Burnaby School District’s Teacher-Librarians. However, this also comprises a significant portion of our Division 1 students’ Term 3 Language Arts assessment, so participation is not optional at Glenwood.

How does it work?
BOTB consists of teams of students that read 10 books between. The students will also create and answer questions in weekly practice battles, and complete some projects for their book. A final team of up to 10 students will be invited to attend a district battle at another school based on their individual effort during the BOTB.

Students will read and become an expert on a minimum of 1 of the books. For which questions will be written and projects completed after Spring Break. These projects and questions will help the students know their books well and make them more effective competitors as well as demonstrate their understanding of their book(s) and various Language Arts curricular and core competencies.

Books read in addition to their expert book will only require questions to be created. The projects will be optional for extra credit. Students reading more than one book have the best chance to be invited to the final battle team.

One of the requirements students will have is to submit a minimum of 2 questions that could be used for a practice battle. The first two questions should be submitted on paper on the Question Paper provided to each student. If they wish to contribute more questions they may submit them to Mrs. Nerpio on lined paper or through this link, which will go live, March 16th and be available until April 24th.

What is the timeline?
The Tuesday before Spring Break we will have a book pass and the students will have the opportunity to nominate their top choices for what book they will be assigned. Don’t be away if you can help it!!
On the Friday before Spring Break students will find out what book they have been assigned and what team they will be on.

Books are released before Spring Break to give students the opportunity to begin reading over Spring Break. Students may also begin submitting questions online at the link above.

After Spring Break we will have weekly practice battles and students will be completing work on their book.

The final inter-school battle will take place sometime around the first week of May.

PRO-TIP from Mrs. Nerpio … one of the best ways to truly understand your book is to read it all the way through once for enjoyment and then go back to the beginning and reread it (a little more quickly) in order to create questions and complete the work!
