{"id":681,"date":"2021-02-18T11:41:46","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T19:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/central-socialstudies\/?p=681"},"modified":"2021-02-18T12:42:33","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T20:42:33","slug":"lifting-black-voices-youth-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/central-socialstudies\/2021\/02\/18\/lifting-black-voices-youth-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Lifting Black Voices Youth Conference &#8211; Feb. 17th, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-682 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/central-socialstudies\/files\/2021\/02\/IMG_4473-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/central-socialstudies\/files\/2021\/02\/IMG_4473-300x242.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/central-socialstudies\/files\/2021\/02\/IMG_4473.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In celebration of the 25th year of Black History Month in Canada, a number of Metro Vancouver School Districts (Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam) participated in the Lifting Black Voices Youth Conference.\u00a0 This was a unique opportunity to see an official address by the Honourable Jean Augustine, who is the first Black woman to be elected as a Member of Parliament.\u00a0 Augustine is also responsible for securing unanimous legislative support for Black History Month in Canada.\u00a0 \u00a0We heard from the keynote speaker Kamika Williams, who is the chair person for the Anti-Racism Coalition of Vancouver and the organizer for the Black-Shirt Day initiative this year.\u00a0 Williams stressed the importance of representation, particularly in schools, as a way to dismantle racism, microaggressions, and harmful stereotypes.\u00a0 \u00a0Representation plays a pivotal role in fostering safe spaces where all people can feel connected and valued.\u00a0 Cecily Nicholson and Khari McClelland are both activists, organizers, and spoken word artists who gifted us with a greater understanding of the experiences of Black Canadians and Black people around the world through poetry and song.\u00a0 The conference culminated with an extraordinary student panel who courageously spoke of their experiences as Black Canadians and Black students in the public education system.<\/p>\n<p>A big thank you to Beth Applewhite and Kenneth Headley for facilitating such an memorable, moving, and inspiring event!<\/p>\n<p>In the words of Kamika Williams: <strong>&#8220;See Something.\u00a0 Say something.
