Hello Wildcats!
We wish you a happy, challenging, and fulfilling school year at Burnaby Central! Check this website to see opportunities in science for grade 8-12 students. You can also follow our IG @bcss_sciencecommunity.
For now, these are two opportunities that may interest you:
Free K–12 environmental-science workshops
The Douglas College Institute of Urban Ecology has a variety of in-person and online, synchronous and asynchronous, workshops available for K–12 classes. The workshops use a variety of tools (games, crafts, outdoor exploration, etc.) to invite participants of all ages to play an active role in discovering the natural world around them and their relationship to it. All workshops include a hands-on participatory learning activity. For more information, please see the online brochure. Registration opens on September 1, and all workshop requests must be made through their online booking system. In-person workshops are only available for BC school districts 36–41 and 43–45. Online synchronous and asynchronous workshops are available to anyone outside this region. Email any questions to iue@douglascollege.ca
Watershed Workforce Program:
The Watershed Workforce program connects youth (ages 15–20) with hands-on opportunities to explore watershed stewardship, learn from experts, and contribute to the health of the Fraser Watershed. Guided by the principles of Two-Eyed Seeing, this two-day experience combines paddling in the watershed with community-based restoration projects.
Participants build practical skills, gain exposure to a range of local career paths, and see how contributing to a healthy, resilient watershed can also support strong, vibrant communities.
This program helps youth imagine future careers rooted in care for watersheds—showing that meaningful, rewarding work is possible close to home.
