Consider ENGINEERING as a great career choice! Tips from UBC

What’s a stable, well-paying career choice?

The pressures on young people are enormous, and the world that they are growing into as adults can feel overwhelming.

They are dealing with so much:

  • The daily struggle of many families to make ends meet
  • The significant cost of education when you consider tuition and living expenses
  • Concerns about the evolving future of employment, including from the impact of AI and other technologies

Here are six reasons why engineering is a great choice in times of economic uncertainty:

  1. It’s about as future-proof a career as you can get. Virtually every industry sector needs engineers and will continue to need engineers.
  2. It’s one of the very few professions that only requires an undergraduate degree. Students do not need to invest in additional post-secondary education to be able to work in their field.
  3. Engineering students can participate in co-op, where they complete well-paid work terms throughout their degree. Many students make significant salaries, offsetting the cost of their education. Co-op also sets them up with an impressive resume and professional network when they graduate – making it much easier to land a job they will love.
  4. It’s a great foundation from which to launch into other careers. Engineering is one of the most versatile degrees and is a gateway to other professions, like medicine or law, or other fields entirely.
  5. It’s great training for entrepreneurship. More CEOs have engineering degrees than MBAs. Engineers learn how to think critically and approach problems in specific ways that sets them up to find innovative solutions others may have missed.
  6. Engineering jobs are some of the highest paying of any undergraduate degree.
