INTRO TO COMPUTING IN PYTHON (ONLINE)
Oct 14-Dec 2, 2023 (Sat) | 10:00 – 11:30 am | Sign up here | Grade 8-12 Flyer Here.
Intro to Computing in Python is a series of seven online workshops that run from 10-11:30 am every Saturday between Oct 14-Dec 2, 2023 (except for the Nov 11 long weekends). In this workshop series, Grade 8-12 students will learn what computer science and computer programming are about. They will also use fundamental programming concepts such as variables, data types, comparison and logical operators, control structures, and functions to create useful programs. Don’t forget to review the workshop overview and requirements before registering!
CODING CLUB (IN-PERSON)
Oct 21 and 28 (Sat) | 2:30-5:30 pm | Tommy Douglas Library | Sign up here | Grade 7-9 Flyer Here.
The Coding Club features various workshops for school-age students to learn how to code and use popular digital tools. We will be offering a two-part workshop series on October 21 and 28 (Sat) that focuses on mobile app development using Thunkable, which is a drag-and-drop app builder. Through attending this beginner-friendly workshop series, students will learn coding concepts that will help them build and personalize a random food picker mobile app. They will also be given the opportunity to present their projects and celebrate their accomplishments in the final workshop. Don’t forget to review the workshop overview and requirements before registering!
STEM SPEAKER SERIES (ONLINE)
The STEM Speaker Series provides high school students with the opportunity to meet and interact with university students, faculty members, and/or working professionals in STEM fields. During this event, our guest speakers will present and discuss their research and/or the work they do in their profession. They will also talk about their career path and what made them pursue the field they are in. Finally, there will be a Q&A session for students to ask questions and interact with our guest speakers.
Ecology & Evolutionary Biology
Oct 14, 2023 (Sat) | 1:00-2:00 pm | Sign up here | Grade 8-12
Our guest speaker for October is Jawad Sakarchi who is a PhD Candidate at the University of British Columbia in the department of Zoology. Jawad researches how competition may create or prevent new species from emerging. He does this by incorporating math, competition theory, and the cutting edge of experimental design in ecology. Join this talk to learn more!
Network Neuroscience
Nov 25, 2023 (Sat) | 1:00-2:00 pm | Sign up here | Grade 8-12
Our guest speaker for November is Justine Hansen, who is a graduate student at McGill University in the Network Neuroscience lab. Justine’s research explores how different spatial scales interact in the brain: from molecular mechanisms to dynamics to cognition. She also relies on open-source data and software to conduct most of her data analysis and is also a proponent of open-science. Join this talk to learn more!
Microscopic Explorations
Dec 2, 2023 (Sat) | 1:00-2:00 pm | Sign up here | Grade 8-12
Our guest speaker for December is Dr. Elaine Humphrey who was trained as a Biological Oceanographer and works in the Advanced Microscopy Facility at the University of Victoria. Elaine was recognized as a fellow of the Microscopy Society of America in 2018 for her contributions to the advancement of the field of microscopy and micro-analysis over the past 34 years. Her talk will demonstrate how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are all in electron microscopy. Join this talk to learn more!
HOUR++ OF CODE – VARIOUS TOPICS (ONLINE)
The Hour Plus Plus of Code event features various one-off workshops for school-age students to learn how to code and implement popular digital tools. Between Sept to Nov 2023, we will be offering multiple online workshops on various topics ranging from user interface and experience design, programming logic foundations (in Python and Java), mobile app development, and game development.
