Vicari, and Ms. Hull. Division 3 (Gr. 6\/7 French Immersion) is continuing work on a Readers&#8217; Theatre unit started at the end of January.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-360\" title=\"shakespeare_reading_f_a_sx\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/cascadeheights-library\/files\/2012\/02\/shakespeare_reading_f_a_sx.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"90\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What is Readers&#8217; Theatre?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a text that is performed orally and dramatically<\/li>\n<li>a reading activity that brings characters to life through voices and gestures<\/li>\n<li>can be in the form of a story, a poem, a scene from a play, or even song lyrics<\/li>\n<li>uses very few (if any) props, as the main focus is on the oral presentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What is the value of Readers&#8217; Theatre?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it focuses on all of the Language Arts: reading, writing, speaking, and listening<\/li>\n<li>it enhances development of communication skills such as: voice projection, intonation, inflection and pronunciation<\/li>\n<li>it facilitates the development of critical and creative thinking as readers create different interpretations of the same story<\/li>\n<li>it is a participatory event &#8211; the characters and the audience are engaged<\/li>\n<li>it is informal and relaxed &#8211; does not require elaborate props, scenery, or costumes, and does not require students to memorize text<\/li>\n<li>it stimulates the imagination and creation of visual images<\/li>\n<li>it enhances the development of cooperative learning strategies &#8211; students work together in groups to discuss, write, and perform a script<\/li>\n<li>it helps to develop a strong sense of self-confidence and self-assurance by working within and presenting within a group structure<\/li>\n<li>it is a FUN way to learn the Language Arts curriculum!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students in Division 3 will be performing scripts that have already been written, and will then move on to adapting a picture book story into a Readers&#8217; Theatre script. The final project will be writing and performing an original script. So far, the students have been enjoying the unit and have had lots of fun performing pre-written scripts!<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hull&#8217;s grade 7 class is continuing genre studies this month. We are currently looking at the features of <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Historical Fiction<\/span><\/strong>. With February being <a title=\"Black History Month\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/cascadeheights-library\/2012\/02\/07\/black-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black History Month<\/a>, it is the perfect time to look at the different types of Historical Fiction. We have read <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholastic.ca\/titles\/henrysfreedombox\/\" target=\"_blank\">Henry&#8217;s Freedom Box<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Ellen Levine, a powerful true story of a slave who escaped to freedom in the late 1800&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-359\" title=\"cover Henrys freedom box\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/cascadeheights-library\/files\/2012\/02\/cover-Henrys-freedom-box-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Will will be discovering more history in the weeks to come, through picture books and novels.<\/p>\n<p>Coming soon&#8230;Division 2 looks at Ancient Greece.
