The Human Library is<span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"> a project created by the Danish <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">youth organization <\/span>Stop the Violence, <span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">in 2000. It is now <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">operational in more than 60 countries. It&#8217;s purpose its to <\/span>\u200b<span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">challenge societal prejudices and to <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">help people form a better understanding of those who <\/span><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">are different from them through conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2806 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6770.jpg 640w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6770-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6770-360x270.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">How it works is that members of the community with interesting life stories and intersectional identities volunteer to act as &#8216;books&#8217;. Our grade 11 and 12 students were then given the opportunity to sit down with the books and\u00a0 ask them questions about their lives and identities. <span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXP248800799\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-scheme-color=\"@374C81,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXP248800799\">The group of books was varied in terms of age, race and sexual orientations. We had 14 books volunteer in total, with their identities ranging from an Indigenous Olympian, to a Queer Urban Planner to a retired Funeral Home Director who was also a Steampunk Professor.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6778.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2807 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6778-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6778-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6778-360x270.jpg 360w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6778.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6776.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2808 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6776-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6776-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6776-360x270.jpg 360w, http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/alpha-library\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_6776.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In total 15 classes attend the all-day event, meaning over 300 students participated. Feedback from students was very positive, with most wishing they had more time so that they could have chatted with more of the books. One student even wrote,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;It was interesting to hear the perspectives and life experiences of people coming from unique environments. Their outlook showed me that everyone has their own book&#8230;humanity is a library and to discriminate would be simply missing out on some good stories.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We thank all the students who participated and the teachers who signed their classes up for the event.
